4 Ways Counselling Can Develop Men’s Self-Worth 

1. Self-reflection and exploration.

The foundational beliefs in counselling, provide a safe and supportive environment for men to explore their thoughts, emotions, and talk about their past experiences. Guided by an experienced and Registered Clinical counsellor, men can gain insights into the influences and cultural beliefs that have shaped their own sense of self-worth and assist them to develop a deeper understanding of themselves.

2.  Challenge limiting beliefs.

It is common for men often hold onto beliefs and expectations about what it means to achieve success, be “successful” or a “worthy” man. Counselling helps men identify and challenge these limiting beliefs, replacing them with more empowering perspectives.

3.  Enhancing self-compassion.

Men can be particularly prone to self-criticism and self-judgment. Counselling fosters self-compassion for men by encouraging men to treat themselves with unconditional kindness, understanding, and acceptance. This change in mindset allows men to acknowledge and see their imperfections not as a fault, to embrace their vulnerabilities, and appreciate their own inherent worthiness.

4.  Building assertiveness and boundary-setting skills.

Self-worth for men can be compromised when a man struggles to set boundaries, prioritize or assert their own needs, or establish healthy interpersonal relationships.

Equipping men with effective communication strategies, assertiveness skills, and tools to establish boundaries, counselling can help men to obtain a healthier and more fulfilling life.
